Joe Moore’s project is one of those groups that means so much to Elefant Records. First, because of their songs and lyrics, and everything they want to transmit with them. But also because of what the music means to him, the way he lives and interprets it: a special project, made and managed in his own studio, that with a few other things makes up a personal universe that is exciting, independent, separate from any other kind of precepts from the music industry, his very own. That’s why we are so happy to be able to get our hands on an album like “Evening Souvenirs”, THE YEARNING’s second album.

This new material is a marvelous surprise. The delicious arrangements, that romantic halo, and Maddie Dobie’s fascinating voice are still there on almost the entire album. But while “Dreamboats & Lemonade” looks to sixties pop from the most cheerful girl-group perspective, “Evening Souvenirs” is a slow, deliberate, nocturnal (as the name itself indicates) album, with echoes of lounge music and “chanson”, of bossa and chamber pop, with touches of Sarah and Él Records’ melancholy, Burt Bacharach soundtracks. Playing with a considerable number of instruments, and the special participation of The Cotswold Voices choir on many of the songs, we find ourselves with one of those albums that needs to be listened to in semi-darkness, where the notes are bursting to the surface, giving you goose bumps hair by hair. From the solemnity of the piano opening of “Evening Souvenirs” to that marvelous advance single, “When I Lost You” (that at times makes us think of Dionne Warwick singing that gem called “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”), to the party supported by Stan Getz on “Don’t Know What I’m Doing” which immediately submerges itself in the saudade of “Fall In Love With Me”. Our hearts break with the pure sadness of “When You Look At Her”. And the dark soul of “Nightingale”, this time with Joe’s voice, which reminds us of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood.

“Ava” opens the B-side with a strong dose of sadness and melancholy; “The Moment Your Heart Would Say Goodbye” is like Dusty Springfield crying like she has never done before. “You Stopped The World” is sweet and placid, like the arrival of first love. “Not That Type Of Girl” brings Françoise Hardy and Jane Birkin together, with Burt Bacharach orchestrating, with those impossible arrangements that recreate amazing stories in our head, in its brief, concise two minutes. The epic “Fools Fall In Love” and the emotive piano of “Sometimes” that sounds like an unforgettable classic, bring the album to a close.

It has been a long time since we heard an album that made sadness so beautiful. It seems like, lately, it was either a taboo subject or it had to be handled crudely and tremendously. But THE YEARNING have made us believe again. They have made us belive in those albums that say they don’t and won’t let themselves sell out, that they are not following a trend, but that deep down we really need them. These songs have made music a necessary ingredient in the lives of those who love it. These melodies that stay with you at times when it seems like everything else has turned its back on you. A moonlit, nocturnal gift.

Track Name: When I Lost You
Why do the raindrops keep on falling
Fall down my window like they do?
Why does the second hand keep moving on
If life ended here when I lost you?

Why do the birds they keep on singing
At dawn, singing like they never knew?
Why do these things just seem to carry on
If life ended here when I lost you?

Every day, here I sit, now without you
My whole world has been turned around
But the world doesn't know how I feel now you
Are out of my life, now you're gone

Every day, here I sit, now without you
My whole world has been turned around
But the world doesn't know how I feel now you
Are out of my life, now you're gone

Why do the children keep on playing
And laugh with no sign of feeling blue?
Why do the people keep on passing by
If life ended here when I lost you?
Track Name: Don’t Know What I’m Doing
I used to know where I was going
I used to feel like I was sure
I knew the way the tide was flowing
But I don't know what I'm doing anymore

I used to walk without a worry
But now I feel so insecure
I used to travel with no hurry
But I don't know what I'm doing anymore

'Cause the world is ever-changing all around me
And time is moving faster than before
The walls are getting higher that now surround me
And I don't know what I'm doing anymore

I used to talk with such precision
There was no doubt, there was no flaw
I used to feel no indecision
But I don't know what I'm doing anymore

I never thought beyond the present
I never looked beyond my door
My life it always felt so pleasant
But I don't know what I'm doing anymore

'Cause the world is ever-changing all around me
And time is moving faster than before
The walls are getting higher that now surround me
And I don't know what I'm doing anymore
Track Name: Fall In Love With Me
Fall in love with me
The night is ours to keep
Give your heart to me
Dive into the deep

To me you will surrender
Fall under my spell
Feel my love so tender
Don't hide inside your shell

To me you will surrender
Fall under my spell
Feel my love so tender
Don't hide inside your shell

Fall in love with me
While the night is young
Give your heart to me
Before the rising sun
Track Name: When You Look At Her
When you look at her
I can tell what you're thinking
So very well
And a sadness grows inside
'Cause the space I filled is now occupied

When you look at her
I can see the way you looked that day
When it was me
And it hurts me, like nothing else
Do you know what I feel when you look at her?

When you talk of her
You're alive
Like you were with me when I arrived
But I've lost you
To that, I'm resigned
'Cause the face you see's no longer mine

When you talk of her
I can hear the way you talked that day
When I was near
And it hurts me, like nothing else
Do you know what I feel when you talk of her?
Do you know what I feel when you look at her?
Track Name: Nightingale
Oh, nightingale come sing to me
Oh, nightingale come sing to me
When we were young, I never heard your song
I never heard your song, when we were young

But now I long for you
That pretty song I never knew
Oh, nightingale
Nightingale

Oh, nightingale come sing to me
Oh, nightingale come sing to me
When we were young, I never heard your song
I never heard your song, when we were young

But now I long for you
That pretty song I never knew
Oh, nightingale

But how I long for you
That pretty song I never knew
Oh, nightingale
Nightingale

Track Name: The Moment Your Heart Would Say Goodbye
Though I can still remember
The look upon your face
That cold and dark December
There was something out of place
The smile it wasn't for me
The letter wasn't mine
And when you said, 'adore me'
I didn't see the signs
But after many sleepless nights
I came to realise
That was just the moment your heart would say goodbye

I think it was the evening
The sun was yet to set
The thought that you'd be leaving
I hadn't felt it yet
It was after we had eaten
You said you had to go
I thought nothing of it
I wasn't yet to know
But suddenly it dawned on me
After days that passed me by
That was just the moment your heart would say goodbye

And now I see it clearly
As the clouds part in the sky
That was just the moment your heart would say goodbye
Track Name: You Stopped The World
With one kiss, you stopped the world
With one touch of your hand
Time stood still
Just for one moment, before I came down
You stopped the world from spinning around

With one glance, you cast a spell
With one flash of your smile
You captured my heart
Just for one moment, before I came down
You stopped the world from spinning around

You stopped the world
So we could be free
From all of our troubles
It's just you and me

Just for one moment, before I came down
You stopped the world from spinning around
You stopped the world from spinning around
Around
Track Name: Not That Type Of Girl
A girl so sweet and so naive
So easily led and easily deceived
But she was hurt and now's she gone
And on your arm she won't belong

An innocence that knew no bounds
She was the youngest of them all in town
But she grew wise of all the lies
Now she can see through your disguise

'Cause baby I'm not that type of girl anymore
I can stand with my two feet on the floor
No I'm not that type of girl anymore
'Cause baby on that girl, I've closed the door

She learned the game that he would play
And blew his charming fairy tale away
She found the key, and now she's free
To be the girl she wants to be

'Cause baby I'm not that type of girl anymore
I can stand with my two feet on the floor
No I'm not that type of girl anymore
'Cause baby on that girl, I've closed the door
Track Name: Fools Fall In Love
Never say I'll be the one who will love you forever
Never say I'll be the one who will always be there
Never say nothing will stop us from being together
Never say love is a gift in which we can both share

You can say I'm a coward
Afraid of the truth
You can say I'm a victim
With scars I can prove
But never say I am a fool
'Cause fools fall in love

Never say you'll be the one who will love me forever
Never say you'll be the one who will always be there
Never say love is the key that will keep us together
Never say we'll be the ones who'll be free from despair

You can say I'm a cynic
Who doesn't believe
You can say I am cold
With no heart that can grieve
But never say I am a fool
'Cause fools fall in love

You can say I'm a coward
Afraid of the truth
You can say I'm a victim
With scars I can prove
But never say I am a fool
'Cause fools fall in love
Track Name: Sometimes
Sometimes we dream of a life of perfection
Sometimes we wish there was somewhere to hide
Sometimes we reach for a paradise only to find that it's there all along by our side

Sometimes we complicate life when it's simple
Sometimes we make it so hard on ourselves
Sometimes we search for the answers to questions when sometimes the problem's the questions themselves

Sometimes we dream of a life of perfection
Sometimes we wish there was somewhere to hide
Sometimes we reach for a paradise only to find that it's there all along by our side
