There are few times that a group’s name explains so much about their musical aspirations. THE MAGIC THEATRE’s music is a dramatic evocation with no limits; thousands of stories seem to flow within their melodies - through the richly timbred, vast instrumentation, in the impossible arrangements, and in the thousands of influences from all over the world that fill their songs. It is fantasy and imagination made into music, something that Dan Popplewell and Sophia Churney exalt on their second album, “The Long Way Home” – their first for Elefant Records.

Ever since Popplewell and Churney met as part of OOBERMAN – the British band that won single of the year about ten years ago from The Times and Mark Radcliffe’s Radio One program, for their single “Shorley Wall” – the two felt compelled to work together. This was finally possible just a few years back with the birth of THE MAGIC THEATRE. After a delicious first album that set up all the parameters that this new album expands on, they signed with Elefant Records. And after that marvelous single, “I Got The Answer”, a song which is included on the album, we finally have “The Long Way Home”.

The magic appears almost immediately. “The Sampler”, a story of a sick Victorian girl trying to finish her embroidery project in time for her birthday, seems like a fairy tale invented by Tim Burton and composed by the famous Danny Elfman, with those arrangements of his that cradle you between mystery and innocence, creating a dream-like atmosphere. “It Was Glorious” shows all the complexity of their compositions, structures, and constantly changing rhythms, as if LOVE were pushing their lyricism to the very limits. The song grows like the memories that make us believe how wonderful life can be. “Festival Of Fire” is an exotic song flooded with Indian and Arabian effervescences, with majestic and moving strings that flirt with the listener through the song’s vast instrumentation and its colorful, epic, and danceable spirit. We realize we are using strong words here; these are musicians with no limits to their creativity – anything is possible. And that is exactly THE MAGIC THEATRE’s goal – to make the listener expect the unexpected. And that is exactly when that folky breeze that is “I Got The Answer” comes in, with its surprising Brazilian percussion. Once again, we realize, anything could happen in any of the songs on “The Long Way Home”.

“Your Hateful Armchair” tells another Victorian tale, of a woman who escapes her evil husband by drugging him then rowing away in the moonlight, growing incrementally to the rhythm of the piano chords, and then opens into to one of the most psychedelic, moving songs on the album. “Cathedrals Of The Mind”, a song about the grandeur and folly of all human achievements plays with the elegance of CAMERA OBSCURA, the epic emotions of THE WALKER BROTHERS, and the biting energy of THE CLASH to create worlds the human mind can’t even conceive of. “Love Is Blue” (which was also on the advance single “I Got the Answer”) is a cover of an André Popp song written for Vicky Leandros to represent Luxemburg with at the 1967 Eurovision, and that Paul Mauriat later turned into a number 1 hit in the US. It shows off Dan and Sophia’s delicacy with arrangements as well as their baroque roots, making us think of the delicious version that Claudine Longet released in 1968.

“I Want To Die By Your Side” is an exquisite demonstration of chamber pop, a declaration of universal love, stuffed full of bucolic beauty; it’s one of the most heart-breakingly beautiful moments of the album. “Heart Strings” brings back the ambiance of mystery, a haunting and beautiful song about the death of someone very close. The last song on the album is also the title track and it brings things to a close with a marvelous lyricism that makes us think of THE GENTLE WAVES insisting on the philosophy that this album gives off: “take the long way home / because life’s not worth living without love / (…) and let’s catch the last rays of sun…”

THE MAGIC THEATRE’s second album has the qualities that the most important albums have – immediacy and the ability to pull you in right away. It is full of complexities, dark corners, subtle details, and an interior world that requires a lot of listens to be able to enjoy it all fully. Ladies and gentleman, the show is about to begin.

Track Name: The Sampler
Through broke thread and pinpricks, I’ll finish my sampler
Deep in the dim nights with oil flickering low
All for a sampler so detailed and perfect that
When… my birthday comes people will want to step in

And I’ll be the belle of the ball
Bask in the envy of all
A princess in blue I’ll be called
In moonlight I’ll dance on the lawn

I’ll prove them all wrong when I walk on my birthday
I… don’t need pity when I’ve got God right by my side
This is for him and he’s guiding the thread through
‘Cause God knows I’m losing the strength to do this alone

But I’ll be the belle of the ball
Bask in the envy of all
A princess in blue I’ll be called
In moonlight I’ll dance on the lawn

Hung in an auction house, come see my sampler
Made in a bad dream two hundred and twelve years ago
Don’t look too closely it’s not quite complete yet
It’s nearly my birthday so it... will be finished quite soon
Track Name: It Was Glorious
They were the best days of our lives
It will always be our time
We were young and the story had hardly begun
We drank through the whole first night, remember?

How we talked into the dawn watched the rising of the sun
No sleep at all and it was glorious
On the summer’s hottest day, we sat scorching in the rays
By the stage and it was glorious

Hung over and dried out we laid low until the sun came down
That night we literally laughed till we cried
We knew we’d be alright, remember?

How we talked into the dawn watched the rising of the sun
No sleep at all and it was glorious
On the summer’s hottest day, we sat scorching in the rays
By the stage and it was glorious

The world was far away we were broke and in a daze
We had a place and it was glorious
On the summer’s hottest day, we lay blissed out in the shade
More than great it was glorious

They were the best days of our lives
It will always be our time
We were young and the story had hardly begun
We drank through the whole first night, remember?

How we talked into the dawn watched the rising of the sun
No sleep at all and it was glorious
On the summer’s hottest day, we sat scorching in the rays
By the stage and it was glorious

The world was far away we were broke and in a daze
We had a place and it was glorious
On the summer’s hottest day, we lay blissed out in the shade
More than great it was glorious
Track Name: Festival Of Fire
A glint in your eyes fires flares through the night
Drawing paths to your side and the future is primed
A procession of beats like black holes in the heat
And all I can see is you falling for me

Forever tonight eternity died
In a circle of light, a fragment of time
Into the flames I've found you again
Where soul mates conspire in the festival of fire

Give me your hand pretend if you can
Don't say your name, as if this was a game
Wave after wave of beauty and fear
We fall as we fall and the moment is near

Forever tonight eternity died
In a circle of light, a fragment of time
Into the flames I've found you again
Where soul mates conspire in the festival of fire

Superposed we divide in a nebula of time
Particles collide in a festival of light
A palpable force of fate lights the walls
We fall as we fall and fate takes its course
Track Name: I Got The Answer
I’ve got a feeling we’re going somewhere
The evenings are light and there’s hope in the air
The summer and sense of adventure’s begun
Time to down tools and just follow the sun

I got the answer I got the answer you got the answer
I got the answer I got the answer we got the answer

We’ve got the breeze and the long country roads
Into the sunset we’ll plan as we go
There’s hope in the morning and mornings beyond
We’ve nothing to lose cause one day we’ll be gone

I got the answer I got the answer you got the answer
I got the answer I got the answer we got the answer

Say after me is there love in the air?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah there is love in the air
Say after me is this what life is for?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah this is what life is for

I got the answer I got the answer you got the answer
I got the answer I got the answer we got the answer
Track Name: Your Hateful Armchair
It’s time I was spreading my four wings
It’s a small world and a small mind I’ve been in
Far beyond the mess you’ve made
I’ve almost disappeared

As the gold sun passed over the cornfields
My heart jumped like a frisson of fear feels
I’ve over thought tonight so much
It feels like déjà vu

Walking through this prison door
That trapped my soul and stole my thoughts
Watch my feet just walk on through
I’m doing this. I’m leaving you

My hand lamp was dimmer than the moonlight
I turned back and saw you for the last time
Sedated in your hateful armchair
Dreaming of yourself

Walking through this prison door
That trapped my soul and stole my thoughts
Watch my feet just walk on through
I’m doing this. I’m leaving you

It’s time I was spreading my four wings
It’s a small world and a small mind I’ve been in
Far beyond the mess you’ve made
I’ve almost disappeared
Track Name: Cathedrals Of The Mind
Part I: HUMANITY

Dyspraxic intellectuals, fanaticals in manacles
Radicals with parables, wastrels and respectables
Tyranists and terrorists, optimists and pessimists
Liars self-deniers, messiahs and pariahs
Seven billion voices in… a random cacophony of Id

Part II: IDEAS

Aristotelian taxonomy, Euclidean geometry
Darwinian biology to multiverse cosmology
Witches and psychiatrists, hypocrites with crucifixes
Paranoid conspiracists conspiring with their enemies
Two million theories and… many reliably false

Cathedrals of the mind mankind
Designed to hide the fear inside
What clever and what tragic apes are we?
Cathedrals of the mind we’ve made
Wrought from thoughts in jumbled brains
The folly of such brave and tragic apes

Part III: BUILDINGS

From the Great Wall of China to the particle colliders
With conduits of power lines we ringed the earth and lit the sky
Legacies of donors such as Gaudi’s Barcelona
Leaving actual cathedrals impossible and meaningful
Two billion structures all… Covering the planet with steel

Cathedrals of the mind mankind
Designed to hide the fear inside
What clever and what tragic apes are we?
Cathedrals of the mind we’ve made
Wrought from thoughts in jumbled brains
The folly of such brave and tragic apes

Part IV: ACHIEVEMENTS

Beatles. Wall-E. Michael Scott. Stewart Lee
And James Dean drinking tea in the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Apple. The moonwalk. Music, and New York
Quorn. And Love. And Flight. And Books
One trillion achievements and some of them actually good

Cathedrals of the mind mankind
Designed to hide the fear inside
What clever and what tragic apes are we?
Cathedrals of the mind we’ve made
Wrought from thoughts in jumbled brains
The folly of such brave and tragic apes

Cathedrals of the mind set free
With bipolar grandiosity
What clever and what tragic apes are we?
Cathedrals of the mind them all
Milestones of our rise and fall
What high achieving deadly apes are we?

This universe will blink and die
At the catastrophic end of time
With no one left to venerate our graves
A spinning pea in empty space
No legacy no human race
And all we ever did, was done in vain
Track Name: Love Is Blue

Blue, blue, our love is blue
Cradle my heart, my loving heart
Blue, blue, our love is blue
Blue like the sky which plays in your eyes

Comme l'eau, comme l'eau qui court
Moi, mon cœur court après ton amour

Fou, fou, l'amour est fou
Fou comme toi et fou comme moi
Bleu, bleu, l'amour est bleu
L'amour est bleu quand je suis à toi
Track Name: I Want To Die By Your Side
Fall on me and I’ll catch you, cos I’ve
Invested everything in you

I want to die by your side, I want to die by your side
I want to die by your side

Tides will untie us
Storms will divide us
But it’s just weather outside us

Cause we are the earth and the trees
We are the earth and the trees
We are the rocks underneath

Our conversations entwined us, till we
Copied each other inside us, now
No force can ever divide us

I want to die by your side, I want to die by your side
I want to die by your side

Saw the gold in the treetops, then we’re
Coalescing like raindrops
Falling down on the rooftops, with

Saturated feelings of a, soft explosion in a
Soul warming river of sun

Fall on me and I’ll catch you, cos I’ve
Entrusted everything in you

I want to die by your side, I want to die by your side
I want to die by your...
I want to die by your side
I want to die by your side

Your moonface glows in your iPhone
I know you so well you’re my home
Our roots are crossing over
Green shoots like starting over
Your moonface glows like the moon
Track Name: Heart Strings
The mountains were burnt and the sky had turned red
I called out your name in the dark
I wound up your music box, memories played

I know that you’re gone, but I’ve got your song here in my heart strings
You’re queen of the stars here in my heart, here in my heart strings

I keep seeing things that remind me of you
I didn’t do all I could do
But you wouldn’t condone such a negative thought, I
Love you
Know you loved me

I know that you’re gone, but I’ve got your song here in my heart strings
You’re queen of the stars here in my heart, here in my heart strings
Track Name: The Long Way Home
Soon we'll be dead and gone
Life's brief even when it's long
We've been going wrong
In our gilded cage
When life's great adventure waits, oh

Let's take the long way home
Cause life's not worth living without love
Let's take the long way home
Stop for a minute to catch up

We'll lose hope if we let it
You easily forget it

Life when we're looking back
Will be gauged by good times we had, not the chains we dragged
Carpe diem we
Should go
Make some memories, oh

Let's take the long way home
Cause life's not worth living without love
Let's take the long way home
Stop for a minute to catch up

We'll lose hope if we let it
You easily forget it

Let's take the long way home
Cause life's not worth living without love
Let's take the long way home
Stop for a minute to catch up
Let's take the long way home
And bask in the last rays of sun
Let's take the long way home
Just like the summers long gone. We'll lose hope...
